How to Measure Distance, Area, and Perimeter in zipBoard

To measure distance, area, or perimeter on architectural drawings in zipBoard, open your PDF file in the review canvas, select the Measure tab, choose your measurement tools, and adjust & calibrate the scale. Click across your drawing to place vector nodes. The measurement will instantly pop up in the Comments panel.

Who Is This For?

This guide is for architects, structural engineers, MEP consultants, interior designers, general contractors, and project managers who want to measure PDF plans, shop drawings, and submittals directly inside their review workspace, without switching to external CAD tools.

Why It Matters

In architectural design and construction submittals, spatial errors and misread scale ratios lead directly to expensive job-site Requests for Information (RFIs), delayed change orders, and material waste.

Traditionally, double-checking a clearance required downloading the PDF, opening a heavy desktop CAD/BIM program, taking the measurement, and manually copying numbers back into review notes. zipBoard’s in-browser Measurement Tool solves this by allowing teams to:

  • Verify Spatial Specs Instantly: Check linear runs, room square footages, and perimeters directly in your web browser.
  • Eliminate Software-Toggling: Avoid switching between desktop CAD software and web comment threads.
  • Keep Task Lists Noise-Free: Capture reference dimensions as lightweight, discussable annotations without clogging your actionable punch list and task register.

How to Use the Measurement Feature in zipBoard?

Step 1: Adjust Your Scale

Accurate measurements depend on establishing a correct scale ratio before taking off any dimensions.

  1. Click the Measure tab
  2. Adjust and Calibrate the Scale accordingly
  3. Click the Add New Scale to customize
  4. Adjust the number of paper and display units.
  5. Select apply

Step 2: Choose Your Measurement Tool

Measuring Linear Spans (Distance)

  • Best for calculating the straight-line span or total travel length between two specific points.
  • To use the distance:
  1. Select Distance from the measurement menu.
  2. Click the starting point Drag along to complete the line

Measuring Enclosed Surfaces (Area)

  • Best for measuring the total two-dimensional surface space enclosed within a boundary.
  • To use the Area:
  1. Select Area from the menu.
  2. Click each corner/vertex around the desired area.

Measuring Boundary Runs (Perimeter)

  • Best for finding the total continuous boundary length around a closed 2D shape with irregular shape.
  • To use the perimeter:
  1. Select Perimeter from the menu.
  2. Trace along boundary edges or baseboards surrounding a designated zone.
  3. Double click to end the marking

How to Collaborate on Measurement?

Every measurement automatically creates a dedicated Measurement Annotation in the Comments sidebar, keeping actionable items separate from task trackers.

  1. Open Comments Panel: Click the Comments icon on the right sidebar.
  2. Review & Tag: Click any measurement entry in the panel to highlight its corresponding location on the PDF canvas.
  3. Collaborate: Click the measurement and use the optional Add Reply to add comments or details on the measurement.

Case Studies

Here is how cross-functional design and construction teams leverage zipBoard's measurement tools during review cycles:

Case Study A: Interior Design & Finish Material Takeoffs

  • Scenario: An interior design team needs to calculate floor tile quantities and baseboard trims for a hospitality project.
  • Workflow:
    1. Calibrate scale using the customized number of paper and display units.
    2. Use the Area tool to outline each guestroom floor plan, getting precise tile square footage (sq ft).
    3. Use the Perimeter tool along room boundaries to extract total linear feet of baseboard molding needed.

Case Study B: MEP Clearance & Code Compliance Verification

  • Scenario: An MEP engineer needs to verify that ductwork clearances comply with minimum corridor width regulations.
  • Workflow:
    1. Open the structural overlay PDF in zipBoard.
    2. Use the Distance tool to measure clear space between mechanical duct lines and adjacent drywall partitions.
    3. Leave a reply on the measurement annotation tagging the sub-contractor: "Clearance is 2'-11", requires minimum 3'-0" per fire code."

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Do measurement annotations turn into actionable tasks?

No. Measurements are logged as informational annotations in the Comments panel. This keeps your project Task List clean and reserved strictly for actionable bugs, punch list items, and design revisions.

Can external guest reviewers use the measurement tools?

Yes. External stakeholders and guest reviewers invited via share link can access the Measurement toolbar to check dimensions without registering an account or logging in.

How do I change measurement units after drawing a shape?

Click on the existing annotation on your canvas, adjust the scale settings to your preferred unit, and select Apply
